Hiya just wanted to put something out there that nags at me and wondering if it niggles at anyone else. To begin, I have a very good friend who used to play for a ANZ premiership team and had always been a GD growing up. She started at her elite club and they said to her flat out, “we don’t want you as a GD as you’re a bit too short so we’re going to train you as a WD”. And they did. And she was great…

Anyhoo, now to Olivia Lewis… one of my favourite up and coming players and love her work in ANL and state league…I realise she plays GK at her second tier level games and does very well. I’ve also seen her come out and play some great games at GK for Fever- the draw against Vixens where she matched up on ThwAites was excellent. But why have we NEVER (not in pre season and not during the chuck-your-bibs-in-the-air kind of games we’ve had this season) seen her out at GD? Not even once? Why is she speaking to the media this week about being trained up as a specialist GK?  She is shorter than all other GKs and also all other GDs. she’s fast and fit so would be a great person to develop to tag someone like a shorter Ga like Wood…. Why are we training her as a specialist Gk if her height will eventually cause her to miss out on selections at SSN or higher level…? Does anyone else think it’s weird to continue her as a GK when the top level coaches have a fit and alert young player who would make and excellent GD/WD swap candidate, given the right coaching? And they can do it as my friend has proven!

e may be short bus is there really any guarantee that she won’t make it because she’s short, I mean Jane Watson is 3cm shorter than her. But I understand where you’re coming from

Jane Watson is 1.81m.  I do expect Jane to be back at GD for the Tactix in the 2020 ANZ, with the return of Temalisi who will play GK.

But Jane does so well at GK for the Ferns, but if she has the height miss match against the Giant GS’s, she MUST get the GD/WD/C to stop the fast high ball into say someone like C Bass.

So height is not that important, but others need to do their job.

I think it works with Lewis at the back in GK, and Bruce up at GD. Bruce offers the height that is lacking from Lewis. I think it balances out.
