To be fair to Belle7 (and I actually really like Sue as a commentator – she provides insight and humour and brings enthusiasm) she does make some errors that are pretty frustrating. For example, she constantly uses the word adversely incorrectly. If it was just a one off or every now and then I wouldn’t be so bothered. Unfortunately she has done it multiple times in every game I have heard her call this season and I wish someone would just quietly explain to her that perhaps she means conversely or perhaps something else entirely. Adversely as she uses it makes no sense. As I have said before, I feel similarly about Liz Ellis and her inability to distinguish between bought and brought. It wouldn’t bother me so much except that it is a repeated error and she is a professional commentator and should get those things right. And sometimes Sue does butcher the names, but she certainly isn’t the worst or only offender there.

Having said all of that I really like Sue and Liz’s commentary.  I just wish I could tweak it a bit!

In my opinion, the best commentator actually IS a male but he rarely gets to do it because he’s more interested in coaching these days. After Dan Ryan, Sue and Jenny Woods are the next best.

Yes Dan Ryan is a fantastic commentator! I wish he would come back to Aus and do SSN but he’s obviously looking to develop as a coach.

Yes I’ve always loved Dan Ryan, insightful, knowledgeable, and a great personality while he commentating.

Dan at NWC was very underwhelming when he did commentate but have loved him before

Sue, Cath, Liz, Claire, Bianca are probably the best we have at the moment. Geitz is decent and Abbey has improved since her first time

I also don’t mind Jack Berketa (sp?) doing sidelines, he at least seems to know a bit

I am frequently an occupant of Pedant’s Corner, and sometimes find myself correcting radio announcers who mispronounce – nukular rather than nuclear (a la George Bush) is a particular irritant. But I have not noticed Sue Gaudion to be anything but audible, intelligible, engaging and entertaining. I am not aware of any ‘spoken errors’ to which you refer, without any evidence. Do you have an axe to grind with her, Belle7, since your only posts – since joining the Forum yesterday – seem to be about Sue.

No axe to grind, Pardalote. I agree Sue is engaging and entertaining, but she’s not perfect. I guess my preference is for commentators who don’t make a lot of mistakes.

I didn’t realise that signing up here required me to comment on more than one post … I also have other things to do so am not able to check this forum constantly! It seems like a great forum though so I’m sure I’ll comment more! 😀

You summed up my thoughts perfectly!

I think he was a little bit out of practice. He was great when he was doing it regularly.

I heard Brenton Speed call the Sydney  AFL game 2 weeks ago, he did the NRL game last weekend, the WC Basketball through the week and he’ll be doing the A-League in a few weeks. All for Fox.

He’d be a special if Fox had the Netball.

And let’s face it, with Dan at NWC he was doing the commentary role ‘off the side of his desk’, with coaching NI being his full time job, so he would have had little time to prepare and do backgrounds. I was intrigued to watch Liz Ellis at the Tasmanian game: apart from brief pleasantries to her colleagues she spent every moment when the game was not being played squinting at screens and paper notes, writing notes, etc. In the breaks Seb Costello would be checking his phone – lots of swiping – whereas Liz appeared to be looking at stats. Clearly, all of that ‘expert’ knowledge does not come without work.

    Hmmm . . . wondering just what Seb’s expert knowledge might be…. :cool2:   😉

I’m not a fan of Dan Ryan’s commentating. I find his voice a bit too high pitched. Definitely gives good insight.

I quite like the guys who are doing it now. Yes they are still learning the game, but I do like the sound of their voices.

This season I have enjoyed all of the commentators. There is not one I don’t like – including all the side line ones too.

Bianca Chatfield has become one of my favs, but I do enjoy them all.
