I thought Brutal Fruit was an odd name, good on Netball SA for securing a sponsor

This is massive, not just for Netball in South Africa but the sport as a whole. I believe this is the first time in history where a male netball team will be competing in a professional league and where it will be televised professionally. I also heard that the players will be getting a salary out of this league. Oh and good luck to Zimbabwe.

So, the Smileys (sorry but that is a silly name) is made up of Proteas based in SA. Presumably then all of the other teams will have no Proteas in them? In which case you’d expect the Smileys to win this Competition easily. Maybe there is some logic at play in having this team training and playing together in a Comp before the World Cup, but it’ll be made up of likely Proteas bench players anyway won’t it?

The Smileys would be like the ANZ Premiership having a 7th team made up of Silver Ferns and the rest of the teams having no SFs in them. And if you had a team of 10 or 12 some of them would be bench warming when they should be starting 7 if they are Internationals surely?

Yes, there have been some bad ones, but that’s just about the worst team name I can recall. It’s embarrassing.

Especially if they aren’t smiling when they are losing….

I’m still trying to work it all out. The men’s side and the Zimbabwe side are playing but their games don’t count. I was wondering if maybe that was the case with this team too, but it doesn’t seem that way. It’s very confusing. Why don’t they just have a regular comp and then when it’s over, bring together the SA players for some practice matches against the other teams or something?

    Yep, it’s strange.

There are two teams called Stars. KZN Kingdom Stars and Presidents Stars. One females and the other males.

Zimbabwe only play 2 games from what I can see. One against the Smileys and the other against the Stars (males).

I agree. A regular Comp with the Proteas players spread through all the teams (no Smileys or Stars means 10 teams), then after the finals series bring the SA based Proteas together with the English based ones and Potgeiter for games against the Mens and Zimbabwe.
