Amazing final, I so wanted Halep to win. But in the end the body just ran out of puff.

I have never been a fan of the way media and event organisers try to squeeze themselves into a patriotic or nationalistic space where they don’t belong. Playing the national anthem when the participants are not representing their country is just self indulgent; we commented that during the Australian anthem before the SSN GF at least six of the players and coaches on court had allegiances to other countries. I hate it when the AFL does it for their finals – these players are not even representing suburbs or states, let alone their nation. I also dislike the way the AFL inserts itself into ANZAC commemorations by having a pre game observance at every game, not just the ones on the 25th. The nadir of this self congratulation occurred today at the start of the Cadel Evans Road Race: a hapless singer stood in the middle of the road singing to a barely heard backing track, meanwhile a few metres away the race patron, Cadel Evans, had his back to the singer and was chatting with cyclists on the starting line, and all of the assembled bunch were talking, smiling and ignoring the anthem. I can only conclude that the sound system was so poor that Evans could not hear it, as I am sure that he would not have deliberately disrespected the anthem, but it shows that nobody even expected the anthem to be played, given that the riders are from at least 20 different nations, and not representing their countries but their commercial sponsors.

Agree Parda, why play the national anthem of Australia, prior to the Women’s Tennis final last night.
The finalists came from Romania and Denmark. But what I did like was that Margaret Court was nowhere to be seen.

So stoked! Australian Women just beat NZ in the Sydney leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Didn’t let a try in the whole weekend, and top of the leaderboard!!! Awesome job girls!

    Yeah, brilliant stuff.

Meanwhile, regarding anthems, flags, patriotism etc, have you seen the US Open? We are mild by comparison.

Yip and it’s so OTT, they play the national anthem before every American Football game, pre season and all.

I love that he has an image of Flinders St station (a Melbourne icon) on his shoes, with the number 5. Apparently he is not allowed to have an image of the cup, even though he has won it five – and now six – times. Copyright/licensing I suppose.

It was a big night for sports fans in the eastern states last night: the netball started when it looked like Australia was strolling to a victory in the ODI cricket, and Roger was going well in the third set. So I watched the netball but quickly muted the sound on the AWFUL commentary, and listened to the cricket on the radio, which had regular crosses to the tennis. When the netball finished we still had the thrillers of the cricket and the tennis to decide between. First world problems.

Australia actually did the double and won the Women’s AND the Men’s HSBC 7s series round in Sydney over the weekend! Great work with Comm Games only 2.5 months away!
